THREADING TOOLS / INDUSTRIAL PROCUREMENT

HSS Metric Straight Flute Machine Tap

Build a metric assortment around the actual shank and square dimensions—not thread size alone.

This HSS straight flute machine tap series spans M2 × 0.4 to M30 × 3.5. Its 17 size-and-pitch combinations give industrial distributors a defined general metric range, separate from the DIN 371 and DIN 376 dimensional families. Straight flutes and a square drive end are the key structural features.

Match pilot-hole preparation to the thread system, workpiece and agreed acceptance requirement.

At M6 × 1.0 this range has L 72 mm, Lc 24 mm, d 6.3 mm and k 5 mm. Compare those dimensions with the DIN families before retaining a customer’s existing holder.

Application, Chip Path & Selection Limits

Match the component and operation

Use this range for metric internal-thread requirements where a straight flute cutting tool suits the workpiece and chip behaviour. Give the material grade, hole type and full-thread depth when selecting a size. Straight flutes provide chip space but do not transport chips towards the entrance in the same way as a spiral flute.

Check the operating boundary

A straight flute is not a universal through-hole-only designation. Blind-hole use depends on the cutting lead, chip space and material. Do not treat the cutting length as usable full-thread depth or select a speed from nominal diameter alone.

Compare the Adjacent Product Families

Product familySelection boundary to review
DIN 371 HSS Straight Flute Machine TapKeep the DIN 371 shank dimensions explicit when a customer asks for a straight-flute replacement.
DIN 376 HSS Straight Flute Machine TapSpecify the reduced-shank straight-flute family without losing the drive dimensions on the order.
HSS Metric Spiral Point Machine TapKeep the chip exit clear when sourcing metric taps for through-hole work.

Keep the selected family, thread designation and dimensional reference together. Shared nominal sizes or drive shapes do not establish interchangeability.

Workshop, Material Handling & Order Organisation

A general metric stock list needs to preserve the round shank and square dimensions as carefully as the M-size. Use the workshop review to discuss how the approved item list will distinguish this series from DIN replacements.

Storage racks and machine area

For the straight flute assortment, put complete size/pitch and the general-series reference on each requested label. If DIN tools are packed in the same shipment, identify them as separate items with their own drive dimensions.

Bar-stock handling

Carry the HSS requirement with the item drawing when discussing material preparation for this range.

Component feed and transfer

Keep the approved item identity and dimensional revision with components during order discussions. Use the exact thread and drive dimensions to distinguish similar tools.

Plan the order around the approved item

  1. Define the thread and application using this product’s selection table.
  2. Compare the tool interface and cutting geometry with the sample or drawing.
  3. Agree sample acceptance, quantities by size and the requested pack arrangement.
  4. Reference the same approved item and revision for replenishment.

Quality Review for the Selected Specification

Focus sample acceptance on the thread designation, cutting-section length and the round-to-square drive interface. A nominal-size check alone will not establish interchangeability with the DIN stock already held by your customer.

Packaging, Custom Requests & Bulk Purchasing

Keep the packing brief specific

For a wholesale size list, keep the pitch and L/Lc/d/k dimensions on each line. Separate general-series replacements from DIN-specified orders so a nominal M6 does not become an unintended holder substitution. Send any marking and pack-count requirements with that list for quotation review.

Marking, packs & repeat orders

For the straight flute assortment, put complete size/pitch and the general-series reference on each requested label. If DIN tools are packed in the same shipment, identify them as separate items with their own drive dimensions.

Product Questions

What is the difference between a straight flute tap and a spiral flute tap?

Straight flutes provide chip space along the tool; spiral flutes help carry chips towards the shank. Choose between them using material, hole form and depth, rather than assuming the same nominal thread makes them interchangeable.

Can this straight flute series be used in a blind hole?

Only after checking the cutting lead, available bottom clearance and chip behaviour for the workpiece. Include both drilled depth and required full-thread depth in the enquiry.

Is the M6 tap the same size as a DIN 371 M6 tap?

No. This M6 × 1.0 has a 6.3 mm shank and 5 mm square; the listed DIN 371 M6 has a 6 mm shank and 4.9 mm square. Check the complete holder interface.

Which metric pitches are included?

The table runs from M2 × 0.4 to M30 × 3.5 and includes 17 combinations. Order the complete diameter-and-pitch designation; do not infer additional fine pitches from the diameter range.

Does the square end mean this is a hand-tap set?

No. This is the listed machine-tap series, supplied as individual sizes. A square driving feature does not specify a three-piece hand-tapping sequence.

How should a distributor specify repeat orders for this range?

Reference the approved thread, material and L/Lc/d/k dimensions, then state quantity and packaging by size. Keep the general series distinct from DIN 371 and DIN 376 items in the reorder list.
