Long Shank Ball Nose End Mills

Select extended-length ball nose end mills by diameter, ball radius, cutting length and holder fit. AXIMET’s catalog includes three long-shank series groups for buyers who need to compare individual models for contouring and profile work.

  • Rounded cutting ends for contoured features
  • Two-flute models across the listed catalog groups
  • Length and shank options organized by model

Match the Ball Profile to Your Application

A ball nose end mill follows a curved profile using its rounded cutting end. When a tool needs additional length, compare the assembly against the feature and holder rather than ordering by diameter alone.

  • Match ball radius to the contour or feature drawing.
  • Check cutting length and overall length as separate dimensions.
  • Specify the holder, part access and quantities with your order.

Ball Nose Series and Model Selection

The catalog lists 92 model records in the HBH/HBI/HBJ, HBXH/HBXI/HBXJ and DBH/DBI/DBJ extended-length groups. Each listing includes the tool's cutting diameter, radius, flute length, overall length, shank diameter and flute count; effective length is supplied for some rows.

Compare the individual tables before building a mixed order. For example, HBH0202A and HBH0202 both list D2 and R1 but show different shank diameters. That distinction matters when the cutter must fit an existing holder.

How Much Reach Does Your Contour Require?

Overall length measures the complete tool. Flute length identifies the cutting section; a listed effective length describes a separate dimension on the drawing. For a recessed profile, review these dimensions together with the holder projection and wall clearance. Where an effective length is not listed, request the information you need for your setup instead of treating the blank as zero.

For a narrow deep feature, a reduced-neck tool may be the more relevant comparison. Names vary by supplier, so compare the geometry rather than relying on a “long shank” or “long reach” label alone. Review the long reach ball nose end mill page and compare the corresponding tool drawing with the pocket.

From Part Drawing to Cutter Choice

Curved cavities and molds. Match the ball radius and diameter to the surface and available access. Consider the toolholder and clamps along the whole path.

Finishing a contour. Cutting contact on a ball end changes with the programmed position. The effective cutting diameter at the contact point can be smaller than the nominal tool diameter, so the programming and cutting conditions need to account for the actual engagement.

A replacement assortment. Record model, radius, flute length, overall length and shank diameter for each size. A longer overall tool is not automatically interchangeable with a shorter ball nose of the same nominal diameter. For a replacement order, compare the existing tool drawing with the selected row, including ball radius, flute length, shank diameter and overall length, then specify any other required fit or machining conditions.

Preparing a Purchase Specification

Provide the feature drawing, workpiece material, operation and machine or holder. Identify the dimensional checks and drawing revision required for sample approval. When placing a repeat order, retain the approved model code and list quantities separately for each item. Include any requested marking, packaging or documentation with the RFQ so the requirements can be reviewed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a long shank ball nose end mill used for?

It is selected for profile or contour milling where the tool's extended overall length is relevant to the setup. Confirm the cutting geometry and access against the part.

What is the difference between ball nose and corner radius tools?

A ball nose has a rounded profile across the end; a corner-radius tool has a flat-ended profile with radiused outer corners. They do not produce identical shapes by default.

Is the ball radius the same as the cutting diameter?

No. They describe different dimensions. Refer to the R and D values in the model table rather than reading them as the same number.

How should I check a long-shank ball nose tool for a deep cavity?

Use the ball profile and tool drawing to check the cavity path, neck geometry and clearance around the holder. Overall length alone does not guarantee access.

Why does effective cutting diameter matter?

At a given contact point on the ball, the engaged diameter can be smaller than the full nominal diameter. This affects how the programmed cutting conditions are interpreted.

What information should a distributor send for a quote?

Provide model and quantity by size, intended workpiece and operation, holder details and any drawing, labeling or packaging requirements.

Request a Quote for Long Shank Ball Nose End Mills

Send the ball radius, cutting diameter, required lengths, shank diameter and quantity for each model, together with the contour requirements and holder details.
