Selecting the Tool for Your Process

Point angle and the following drill

Check the next drill manufacturer's guidance before choosing the spotting angle. A spot narrower than the following drill's point can cause its outer cutting edges to contact first. Some drills are designed to start without a separate spotting operation, so the complete drilling sequence matters.

Starting feature and available space

The finished spot size depends on point geometry and the depth used. Review the required location, surface condition and adjacent features on the part drawing before setting the operation.

Tool holding

Select the holder for shank diameter d, then check clamping length and tool projection. Include the machine, material and required feature when requesting a technical review.

Where Buyers Use the DP Range

CNC hole preparation

For a process that calls for a starting spot, select the point angle and diameter together with the following drill. Record the spot position and depth in the process plan.

Distributor assortments

Group purchasing lines by point angle, diameter and shank size so customers can find the geometry they need. Keep each DP model and quantity separate on the quotation.

Replacement tooling

Use the original model or a dimensioned drawing when replacing an existing spot drill. A matching diameter alone does not establish the same point angle, flute length or holder fit.

Solid Carbide Spotting Drill FAQ

Do I always need a spot drill before a solid carbide drill?

No. Some drills are designed for self-starting. Follow the instructions for the specific drill and assess the workpiece surface and setup before adding a spotting operation.

How should the spot angle relate to the following drill?

Compare both point geometries and follow the following drill manufacturer's recommendation. A narrower spot can cause the outer edges to contact first; confirm the drilling sequence for your tools and process.

Is a spotting drill the same as a centre drill?

The terms sometimes appear together, but a conventional centre drill and a spotting drill can have different geometries and intended tasks. Compare the drawing and required operation before substituting one for the other.

Does the tool diameter equal the finished spot diameter?

Not necessarily. The spot produced depends on the point geometry and the depth used. Check the required feature against the process drawing and trial setup.

Can a spot drill correct every irregular workpiece surface?

No. A steeply inclined or highly irregular surface may need a different preparation method. Review the surface and intended drill with the process owner before choosing the sequence.

What should accompany a mixed-model quotation request?

List each full DP code and quantity, the destination and any packaging or inspection-document requirements. For an application review, include the workpiece and the following drill's geometry.
