HSS BSP Parallel and Taper Pipe Thread Tap

Separate parallel G and tapered ZG requirements before sourcing a pipe-thread tap.

The HSS BSP pipe-thread range lists G parallel and ZG taper designations from nominal 1/8 inch to 1 inch. It uses a 55° Whitworth pipe profile and square drive ends. Pipe size labels describe a pipe-thread system, not the physical tap diameter in inches.

  • 55° Whitworth pipe thread form.
  • G parallel and ZG taper designations in the size range.
  • HSS construction with a square drive end.
  • Listed nominal pipe sizes: 1/8 inch to 1 inch.

Sizes, Dimensions & Drive Interface

Dimensions are in millimetres except thread designations, drive labels and lead counts. Read each column with the dimension reference below.

Match pilot-hole preparation to the thread system, workpiece and agreed acceptance requirement.

G and ZG entries have different dimensional patterns in the source table. Several ZG entries share L 96 mm, d 20 mm and k 16 mm; check the requested item against the approved drawing instead of assuming a size progression.

Application, Chip Path & Selection Limits

Match the component and operation

Begin with the component drawing and the exact parallel or taper thread requirement. Confirm pitch, mating component and the intended sealing arrangement before reviewing tap dimensions and holder fit.

Check the operating boundary

Do not substitute NPT, which has a different thread profile. A G designation does not itself specify a thread-sealing method. For taper orders, include the required standard and engagement/gauging position.

Compare the Adjacent Product Families

Product familySelection boundary to review
UNC UNF and BSW Spiral Flute TapKeep UNC, UNF and Whitworth threads separate when replenishing blind-hole tap stock.
UNC UNF and BSW Spiral Point TapFor inch through-hole orders, match the thread family and leave space for forward-moving chips.
HSS Metric Straight Flute Machine TapBuild a metric assortment around the actual shank and square dimensions—not thread size alone.

Keep the selected family, thread designation and dimensional reference together. Shared nominal sizes or drive shapes do not establish interchangeability.

Workshop, Material Handling & Order Organisation

Pipe-thread orders need parallel/taper identity and a defined acceptance reference. Use the supplier review to resolve the component’s G or ZG requirement before interpreting the repeated dimensions in the size table.

Storage racks and machine area

For pipe taps, request G or ZG, nominal pipe size and TPI in the item identification. If a standard or gauging position is specified, keep its drawing reference with the packing instructions.

Bar-stock handling

Carry the HSS requirement with the item drawing when discussing material preparation for this range.

Component feed and transfer

Keep the approved item identity and dimensional revision with components during order discussions. Use the exact thread and drive dimensions to distinguish similar tools.

Plan the order around the approved item

  1. Define the thread and application using this product’s selection table.
  2. Compare the tool interface and cutting geometry with the sample or drawing.
  3. Agree sample acceptance, quantities by size and the requested pack arrangement.
  4. Reference the same approved item and revision for replenishment.

Quality Review for the Selected Specification

Pipe-thread approval needs the correct thread system and gauging requirement, not merely a diameter measurement. Agree the taper/parallel definition and the inspection reference before a sample is approved.

Packaging, Custom Requests & Bulk Purchasing

Keep the packing brief specific

Split the purchase list into G and ZG lines and include the thread standard on the drawing. For a mixed pipe-thread order, preserve nominal size, TPI and parallel/taper identification in the packing request.

Marking, packs & repeat orders

For pipe taps, request G or ZG, nominal pipe size and TPI in the item identification. If a standard or gauging position is specified, keep its drawing reference with the packing instructions.

Product Questions

What is the difference between G and ZG in this range?

The source list uses G for parallel pipe threads and ZG for taper pipe threads. Supply the required drawing and standard so the intended thread and gauging conditions can be confirmed.

Can a BSP tap be used for NPT threads?

No. BSP uses a 55° Whitworth profile while NPT uses 60°, with other system differences. A nearby nominal pipe size is not a substitute.

Does G1/2 mean the tap diameter is half an inch?

No. Pipe sizes are nominal system designations. Use the complete pipe-thread designation, TPI and drawing rather than converting the label directly to a tool diameter.

Does a parallel G thread create a seal on its own?

Do not assume that. The sealing arrangement belongs to the component design and may involve a separate sealing face or element.

Why is the ZG holder size important to confirm?

Several source entries repeat the same 20 mm shank and 16 mm square. Match the particular ordered tool and drawing before committing to an existing holder.

What should a taper pipe tap RFQ contain?

Give the standard, nominal size/TPI, mating part, material, required thread position and acceptance method, plus holder and quantity. Attach the component drawing where possible.
