Solid Carbide Ball Nose End Mills

Choose ball nose end mills by cutting diameter, radius, flute count and reach for your machining and distribution requirements. AXIMET's catalog brings six series groups together so you can specify the right tool by model.

  • Two- and four-flute catalog options
  • Ball nose geometry for contour and radius machining
  • Model-by-model dimensions for ordering and replenishment

Select a Ball Nose End Mill for Your Application

A ball nose end mill has a rounded cutting end for machining curved profiles and three-dimensional surfaces. When you order, the tool diameter alone does not describe the complete tool: ball radius, flute length, usable reach, shank diameter and overall length all affect how it fits the job and toolholder.

Start with the surface you need to machine and the available clearance around the feature. Then match the required dimensions to the specific model. Share the workpiece material and machine setup with your inquiry so the quotation refers to the intended application.

  • Ball-nose profile for curved surfaces and contour machining
  • 2- and 4-flute options across the listed series
  • Compare ball radius, tool length and shank size by model

Ball Nose End Mill Series

The catalog contains 114 model records across the following six product groups. Select by model rather than assuming that every dimension or option is available in every series.

Dimensions to Check Before Ordering

FieldWhat to compare
Cutting diameter, DThe nominal cutter size against the feature and available access
Ball radius, RThe required contour radius against the listed model radius
Flute length, LcThe cutting length needed for the feature and operation
Effective length, L1Where listed, the available reach against the required clearance
Overall length, LThe complete tool length against the holder and machine space
Shank diameter, dThe toolholder's specified clamping diameter
Flute count, FThe available 2- or 4-flute configuration for the selected model

Refer to the series dimension drawing alongside the model table. A dash or blank in a catalog field does not mean the dimension is zero. For a repeat order, use the model number and the same dimension fields used on the approved quotation or drawing.

Where Ball Nose Geometry Helps

Three-dimensional profiles. A rounded end is useful when the tool follows a curved surface, such as a contoured cavity or form. Match ball radius and tool access to the part drawing.

Mold and electrode surfaces. Curved features may require a ball end and suitable reach. For copper electrodes, review the listed EB series and specify the geometry and workpiece in your request.

Feature transitions. When a machined surface requires a rounded toolpath, compare the part's feature radius with the ball radius. A ball nose and a corner-radius cutter have different end profiles, even when their cutting diameters are the same.

Plan for the Ball Profile in Finishing

At a shallow axial depth of cut, the portion of the ball edge in contact with the workpiece has an effective cutting diameter smaller than the tool’s full nominal diameter. Your programming and speed selection should account for the actual contact point rather than relying on nominal diameter alone. The required surface, stepover, reach and machine setup also matter; use the tool and machine supplier’s instructions for cutting conditions.

For distributors supplying mold or electrode work, ask for the target contour and finish as well as the nominal size. These details help distinguish a standard ball nose from a longer-reach model and avoid treating two cutters with the same diameter as identical.

Choose Flute Count and Reach by the Job

A two-flute and a four-flute ball nose end mill are different configurations. When comparing them, consider the work material, the operation, chip evacuation and the machine setup. More flutes are not automatically the better choice for every job. Match the selected model to the toolpath and machining conditions.

For deep or restricted features, check the complete assembly: cutting length, reach where specified, holder and the clearance around the tool. An extended overall length does not by itself describe the usable reach. If additional access is required, compare the dimensions of the long reach ball nose end mill with the requirements of the part.

Product Documentation and Quality Requirements

Use the series drawing, catalog model and dimension table together when comparing an item. If a diameter, radius, reach or shank dimension is critical to your order, include the drawing and acceptance requirement in the RFQ. This allows the quotation and any sample review to refer to the same specification.

For repeat purchases, retain the agreed model, dimensions and approved labeling with your order records. Share any inspection documents or checks you require so they can be discussed for the selected series.

Order and Packaging Requirements

Tell us whether you need a recurring assortment, replacement sizes or a project-specific quantity. Include the model and quantity per size, destination market and any labeling or packaging requirements. If you need samples or custom presentation, add those details to the inquiry so the requirements can be reviewed for your order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a ball nose end mill used for?

A ball nose end mill is used to machine curved or three-dimensional profiles. Select the cutter radius, diameter, reach and toolpath for the shape and material being machined.

What is the difference between a ball nose and a corner-radius end mill?

A ball nose has a rounded cutting end; a corner-radius end mill has a flatter end with radiused corners. Choose according to the profile required on the part, rather than treating cutters with the same diameter as interchangeable.

Why does effective cutting diameter matter for a ball nose end mill?

When a ball nose cutter engages at a shallow depth, its effective cutting diameter at the contact point is smaller than the nominal tool diameter. Consider the contact position and toolpath when setting cutting conditions, and follow the guidance for the selected tool and machine.

Does overall length tell me how deep the cutter can reach?

No. Overall length includes the entire tool. Check the cutting length, any listed effective length, the holder and clearance around the workpiece before selecting the tool.

Which ball nose end mill should I request for copper electrodes?

The catalog lists the EB group within its copper electrode series. Provide the electrode material, required ball radius, cutter diameter, reach and machine setup so the appropriate catalog model can be discussed.

What should I include in a bulk inquiry?

Send the model number or required diameter, ball radius, flute count, cutting and reach dimensions, shank diameter, work material, quantity for each size and delivery market. Include packaging or marking requirements when relevant.
