Ask for STI to remain visible with the insert nominal size and pitch. Include the insert specification in the purchasing documents; a label stating M6 alone does not identify the receiving-thread tool.
Buy the insert-preparation tap for the insert system—not an ordinary tap with the same M-size label.
This HSS straight flute STI tap range prepares internal threads for wire thread inserts. Nine entries cover insert thread designations M2 to M12. The STI designation describes the insert-receiving thread, so it must stay visible in the item description and packing specification.
Dimensions are in millimetres except thread designations, drive labels and lead counts. Read each column with the dimension reference below.
| Thread / designation | Overall length L (mm) | Working / cutting length Lc (mm) | Listed diameter d (mm) | Square / drive k (mm) | Pilot reference (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| STI2x0.4 | 44.5 | 9.5 | 2.8 | 2.24 | 2 |
| STI2.5x0.45 | 48 | 11 | 3.35 | 2.8 | 2.6 |
| STI3x0.5 | 53 | 13 | 4 | 3.15 | 3.1 |
| STI4x0.7 | 58 | 16 | 5 | 4.5 | 4.1 |
| STI5x0.8 | 66 | 19 | 6.3 | 5 | 5.2 |
| STI6x1.0 | 72 | 22 | 6.3 | 5 | 6.2 |
| STI8x1.25 | 80 | 24 | 8 | 6.3 | 8.3 |
| STI10x1.5 | 80 | 29 | 9 | 7.1 | 10.3 |
| STI12x1.75 | 95 | 30 | 11.2 | 9 | 12.4 |
Match the insert-system hole specification and acceptance requirement before using a pilot reference.
The STI6 × 1.0 entry lists L 72 mm, Lc 22 mm, d 6.3 mm and k 5 mm. Include insert-specific acceptance requirements as well as those tool dimensions when discussing a replacement.
Use the chosen wire insert’s nominal thread, pitch, length and installation specification to define the tapping requirement. The component material, hole type and installed-insert depth are part of that review.
An STI tap is not an ordinary metric tap for the final screw thread. Pilot-hole and thread acceptance requirements need to match the insert system; a tap from one application should not be substituted on nominal M-size alone.
| Product family | Selection boundary to review |
|---|---|
| HSS Metric Straight Flute Machine Tap | Build a metric assortment around the actual shank and square dimensions—not thread size alone. |
| HSS Metric Spiral Flute Machine Tap | General metric return-chip spiral flute series for blind-hole selection; retain the published dimensions. |
| HSS Metric Three-Piece Hand Tap Sets | Keep a three-piece hand-tapping set together through ordering, sample approval and replenishment. |
Keep the selected family, thread designation and dimensional reference together. Shared nominal sizes or drive shapes do not establish interchangeability.
An STI stock line has to stay associated with the insert system throughout the purchasing discussion. Review the receiving-thread requirement and approved sample together, so an ordinary metric tap cannot be mistaken for the insert-preparation tool.
Ask for STI to remain visible with the insert nominal size and pitch. Include the insert specification in the purchasing documents; a label stating M6 alone does not identify the receiving-thread tool.
Carry the HSS requirement with the item drawing when discussing material preparation for this range.
Keep the approved item identity and dimensional revision with components during order discussions. Use the exact thread and drive dimensions to distinguish similar tools.
Agree acceptance of the tapped insert-receiving thread using the selected insert system. A normal screw fitting the final nominal thread does not by itself establish correct STI preparation.
Use the following items to define the sample and order acceptance brief.
| Review item | What to agree | Procurement risk addressed |
|---|---|---|
| Thread identification | Insert-receiving thread and chosen insert system | Avoid the wrong thread family or pitch |
| Dimensions and holding | The STI6 × 1.0 entry lists L 72 mm, Lc 22 mm, d 6.3 mm and k 5 mm. Include insert-specific acceptance requirements as well as those tool dimensions when discussing a replacement. | Avoid holder mismatch, insufficient reach or unintended substitution |
| Geometry / set identity | Agree acceptance of the tapped insert-receiving thread using the selected insert system. A normal screw fitting the final nominal thread does not by itself establish correct STI preparation. | Avoid the wrong cutting form or incomplete member sequence |
| Sample acceptance plan | Agree the reference drawing, acceptance method and sampling requirement for the application | Make sample approval and repeat-order review refer to the same item |
Keep the insert specification attached to each STI order line, including nominal thread, pitch and insert length. Distinguish the insert-preparation tap from the ordinary metric taps in a distributor’s stock and packing labels.

It makes the receiving thread for a wire thread insert. After installation, the insert provides the nominal internal thread for the screw.
No. The insert needs its own receiving thread geometry. The same nominal M6 label refers to the final insert thread, not an interchangeable tap profile.
Use the specified insert system and workpiece conditions to agree the hole diameter and tolerance. Do not substitute a standard metric cutting-tap drill value.
Nine entries run from STI2 × 0.4 to STI12 × 1.75. These are insert-thread designations and must be ordered with the STI requirement explicit.
Provide insert length, installed position, required receiving-thread depth and total drilled depth. Allow for the tap lead and installation requirements.
Attach the insert specification, nominal size/pitch, component material and hole drawing, then holder dimensions and quantities. Identify the required thread acceptance method.
Send the selected thread designation, quantities and the application details below. Add a drawing or size list to keep the enquiry tied to the required configuration.
