Ball Nose End Mills for High-Temperature Alloys

When your order involves contoured parts, select the ball profile and reach together. AXIMET's SGB catalog series lists two-flute ball nose end mills by model for high-temperature alloy applications, with the dimensions needed to compare cutters and prepare a quotation.

  • Rounded cutting end for contour and profile machining
  • Two-flute SGB series with individual model dimensions
  • Ball radius, diameter and shank recorded for each selection

Choose an SGB Ball Nose End Mill for Alloy Contours

The rounded end changes the contact geometry used for a curved or three-dimensional toolpath. Square end mills for high-temperature alloys may also be used for some three-dimensional operations; compare the programmed contact and the desired feature before substituting. Start with the target contour, then compare the ball radius and cutting diameter with the feature drawing. Check the flute length, holder and required projection before approving the tool for a recessed area.

  • Identify the ball radius and cutter diameter required by the part.
  • Compare the cutting length with the area to be reached.
  • Include alloy grade, machine and holder details with the model list.

SGB Series for Contour Work

The SGB series contains 23 catalog model records with a two-flute geometry. Each specification row identifies the model, cutting diameter, ball radius, flute length, overall length, shank diameter and flute count. Use the model row and dimension drawing together when selecting a size.

The ball radius describes the rounded end; it is not the same field as a corner radius end mill for high-temperature alloys. When a distributor's customer supplies only a diameter, ask for the intended profile and the feature drawing before substituting another tool.

What to Compare for a Contoured Feature

Ball radius and cutting diameter: Check the radius against the contour and the diameter against the available access. The required part geometry and programmed toolpath determine whether a particular ball profile is suitable.

Flute length and tool access: Consider the depth and shape of the cavity, the programmed engagement and clearance around the tool. Check the holder and projection as part of the same assembly.

Overall length and shank: The shank must fit the holder. Overall length helps establish the space needed in the machine, but it does not by itself establish the usable reach inside a cavity.

Effective diameter during cutting: Contact near the ball tip can occur at a smaller local diameter than the nominal diameter. At the same spindle speed, that affects local cutting speed. Review the programmed contact, engagement and tool supplier guidance instead of applying a speed from an unrelated cutter.

Specify the Alloy and the Operation

High-temperature alloys vary by grade and condition. Include the exact material, the type of contour, machine, toolholder and coolant arrangement when asking for a recommendation. For a mold feature or a profiled component, a drawing is useful when the required radius and tool access are difficult to describe in words.

For a distribution range, keep the model, ball radius, dimensions and required quantity together on each order line. For a repeat order, reference the approved model and drawing so the quotation uses the same selection criteria.

Purchase and Sample Requirements

Ask for the documentation and sample checks that matter to your order. Identify the dimensions your team intends to review and provide any required labeling, barcode or packaging instructions. Requirements can be reviewed alongside the requested model and quantities.

Compare the SGB ball profile with the square end mill for high-temperature alloys and corner radius end mill for high-temperature alloys before changing tool form.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I consider a ball nose end mill?

Consider a ball nose when the toolpath needs a rounded end for a curved profile or three-dimensional surface. Check the radius, access and workpiece requirements against the selected model.

How many flutes are listed for the SGB series?

SGB is listed as a two-flute ball nose series. The individual model row provides the corresponding diameter, radius and tool dimensions.

Which radius should be specified for an SGB contouring order?

Specify the ball radius shown on the SGB model row together with cutting diameter and the required contour. A corner radius belongs to a different cutter geometry and should not be substituted without checking the toolpath.

What should a repeat order for contouring include?

Reference the approved SGB model, ball radius, dimensions and quantity. If the contour, material condition, holder or program has changed, send the revised drawing and setup details for review.

Can I select an SGB model from the material name alone?

No. Provide the specific alloy grade and condition as well as the contour, cutting dimensions and machine setup. These details help determine whether a listed model suits the task.

What information helps prepare a wholesale quotation?

Send SGB model codes or the required ball radius and dimensions, quantity per size, alloy grade and condition, application, machine and holder details, and any packaging or sample requirements.
